Bridezilla Tamers – Not every DJ is a Wedding DJ

Wedding Nightmare Bride

Don't become like this on your wedding day!

One of the biggest mistakes most brides make is assuming that a wedding DJ just plays music and makes simple announcements at a wedding.  As a matter of fact, I get a number of brides that tell me they want just that when they call on the phone.  But just how simple is it to make these announcements? In Orange County alone there are hundreds of untrained DJs that call themselves wedding DJs.   Here are some things to think about when looking for a DJ for your wedding.

1)  If these announcements are so simple, why do so many DJs mess them up?

Ever heard a DJ mispronounce the bride or groom’s name?  Easy mistake right?  I once went to a wedding as a guest where the DJ mispronounced the couples name the entire reception.  So much so that it became a joke among the guests and is the main thing we all remember about the wedding.  Is that what you want?

2) What happens when the DJ plays the wrong song or an inappropriate song during your reception?

Have you ever searched bad DJ on YouTube?  If you did, you can see plenty of  examples of DJs playing the wrong songs for the first dance and/or playing songs that are inappropriate for a wedding.  Watching the expressions on the guests’ faces is priceless.  Sure it’s quite entertaining to watch it on YouTube, but do you really want to watch it happen at your wedding too?

We here at Orange County Wedding DJ company - Music Man Event Professionals – believe in what we call the 5 P’s  – Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.  In order to not make most of the mistakes listed above, you have to know how to prepare properly.  I personally went to college and earned a degree in radio and television broadcasting and it was during this training I had to learn how to execute announcement properly and how to prepare to do so or fail the course.  I also had industry professionals working with us to teach us how to do it properly.  Why would  they feature  courses like this as part of a degree program if it was so easy?  Ryan Seacrest just makes simple announcements as  his job with American Idol yet he gets paid millions right?  It’s because he makes them the right way.

Next we have the music.  Playing the music is the easy part.  Monkeys can be trained to press play right?  It’s the selection that is the hardest part of playing the music yet everyone thinks they can choose the right music.  The truth is, everyone can.  Choosing the music is the easy part.  Its the order in which they are played that really matters.  Anyone can fill an IPOD with all the songs they love and that ipod will play all the great music you could want for hours without interruption.  But will it play it in an order that would keep the tempo of the event moving and keep the dance floor full throughout the entire event.  This is something one can’t be taught but instead something one learns through experience.  One also have to be able to learn from their mistakes and make adjustments rather than just blaming the client and their guests and pronouncing them lame.  It is the ability to adjust and learn from one’s mistakes that makes them a great DJ.  Pair this with the ability to execute announcements properly and then they can call themselves a great wedding dj.
