Not every bride and groom couple wants the same thing from their wedding entertainment.  We have some clients who are very particular on what they want and how they want it while sometimes others just want to give us a result they want and they want us to “handle it”.  Some brides want it to be a “party” type of environment while others want it to be “elegant and fun”.  Because of this, it’s important for you to verify that the DJ you hire can deliver the wedding you want.

If you just want to know how much it would cost to get someone to DJ your wedding well, you can find someone on the internet for as low as $200 … maybe lower if you really want.  Now if you hire that $200 guy/gal and the service they deliver is disappointing, was that a good investment?  Was the money you invested in your photography and videography to capture all of your memories of your not-so-thrilling-wedding a good investment as well?  I am hoping you said no.  If you did, you are right.

If you have never been to The Hills Hotel in Laguna Hills, then you are in for a surprise.  It used to be the old Holiday Inn but was purchased by new owners who completely re-modelled the hotel and the ballroom.  It is beautiful and perfect for a wedding with 150 – 200 guests.  The only downside from a DJ perspective is the bar is outside the room and that is a major no- no if you want to keep people engaged in your event.  Other than that, the room is great especially if you are going to light it.  Above is what the room looked like after we added our uplighting and name in lights services to the room.  it went from being beautiful to amazing.  Maria, the catering manager at the Hills said the room looked “Perfect”.

Now if you are planning a wedding and you are considering the Mission Viejo Country club, you are considering a great place for a wedding!  The staff there is great!  We worked with the assistant general manager Lorraine Grassmann and she was great!  She made sure that everything that needed to happen at the venue did and worked with us hand in hand to make sure everything went smoothly.  We added it as a new favorite place to work a wedding and will gladly refer wedding clients there.

When Kimberly came to us to discuss her wedding one of the most important things to her was the music.  She wanted to keep the elegance that the Richard Nixon Library ballroom projects but also wanted to create a club like atmosphere.  I guess you can say she was looking for a elegant club style wedding if there is such a thing.  We were able to do just that for her.

We started by providing ambient up-lighting for the room. Her color theme matched the existing colors in the room so it was an amber, gold and white theme.  When we dimmed the lights for the dancing part of the evening or even for a more elegant dinner the room would have been just white, so we added a hint of amber/gold colored up-lighting to the room … Just enough to give it a glow.  To add some elegance to the dance floor area, we projected a nice wedding font “R” on the dance floor for Rheault, the couple’s new last name.

While most other DJ Companies eat during dinner, we elect to work, which shocks a lot of venues.  So during dinner we manipulated the music selection to slowly build the energy in the room to get people into the party mood.  It worked flawlessly!  We had a packed dance floor right from the beginning and they danced all the way up until we were told to shut it down.

2)  Your photographer and/or videographer will be capturing your memories for you of this day and presenting them to you afterwards for you to cherish for the rest of your lives.  This being said, if you didn’t budget correctly for the DJ, the memories they capture aren’t going to be ones you want to revisit.  So this money will be wasted.  Photographers and videographers love great DJs as they really do help them deliver a better product to their clients.

Wedding DJs – Everyone with a large music collection (and a means to play them loudly), claims to be a professional Wedding DJ.  When in all reality, they really aren’t.  Because of this, you really have to be careful other wise your wedding reception could end up on YouTube as a prime example of a wedding DJ disaster.  Is this what you want?  Probably not!  In all reality, the wedding DJ that is going to care enough about your wedding isn’t going to be at the lower end.  Just like any job, you can find all kinds of cheap labor but sacrifice quality.  Keeping this in mind its safer to over-budget than to under-budget.

Also, keep in mind that because you budget this, doesn’t mean you have to spend all of it.  Instead this will allow you to afford the DJ you want, versus only the DJ you can afford.

Planning

While wedding planners often handle this for some clients, the DJ is the expert in how a wedding reception timeline can affect the success of your wedding reception.  You can often look to them to help with what formality should go when and they can even give you a great reason why.  When you hired the DJ, you put them in charge of the entertainment and the reception timeline has a huge impact on on the success of your wedding.

Coordination

The DJ can also act as the quarterback for your wedding reception.  Not only can he keep you in the loop with what is happening next and when, but also will assist the other vendors (photographer, videographer) in making sure they are In the right place at the right time to capture that special moment for you.  When we have a wedding planner at a wedding, we often work hand in hand with them for this.

Emceeing

Most real professional wedding DJs are excellent emcees.  They have taken advanced classes and know how to make appropriate announcements while guiding you and your guests through the evening. They know how to engage your guests and get them excited and motivated to let loose and have fun without making themselves the center of attention.

Music Director

Last but definitely not least is the task of being the music director for your wedding.  The professional wedding DJ will have a vast knowledge of music.  This includes knowing all of the different genres and what songs from each to play that would keep your guests on the floor.  They also will be a great resource for you on what songs to use for your formalities to ensure they make the impact that you want.  The real professional wedding DJ will also not require you to list out all of the songs you want them to play but instead will ask you for the songs that you definitely want to hear.  The reason for this is that the music is a tool for them to create the results you want and the real professional wedding DJ will know how to use this tool effectively.

A big factor in the success of your day will be your entertainment.  How do you select the right DJ for your wedding celebration?  Why is this decision the most important decision?  Because no matter how much you spend on food and décor, it is the one area that people will remember the most.  They will remember if they had a great time dancing or if the DJ was really bad.  The worst part is if the DJ was bad, you will be reminded about it for the rest of your lives.  So when hiring a DJ, it’s best to take some precautions.  In this post, I am going to give you a step by step process that will help you hire a DJ that will be the right one for you and make sure your event is a memorable one for all the right reason.

First, you are probably wondering who I am and what makes me an expert in this area.  I am a professional Mobile DJ that specializes in Weddings and Milestone events.  I have been in the industry for over 27 years.  As someone who is extremely passionate about the industry, I  want to see everyone have a positive experience with their mobile wedding DJ.  The best way to do this is to educate as many people as possible on how to find the right DJ for them.  That is the objective of this post.

The entertainment is going to be one of the most important aspects of your wedding.  No matter what, you should be involved in the decision process as to whom you are going to hire.  Do not put this in the hands of a wedding planner.  They have other motives and typically will use vendors who give them a kickback (even though they say they don’t).  You would not believe how many wedding planners have offered that I can be their DJ of choice … for a price!  Never mind, that we’re a great DJ company!

When hiring your vendors, you should take the same approach that a company would take when hiring someone to fill a position.  Let’s call your wedding “My Wedding, Inc” and you and your fiancé are co-CEOs.  Your job now is to surround yourself with professionals that will help your company hit its objective:  putting together the wedding you want.

First thing you need to do before hiring your DJ is to put together a position description.  What is it that you want your DJ to do?  If you don’t know what a DJ does, then check out my blog post, “What Exactly Does a Professional Wedding DJ Do?”.  It is here that you will define what you should be looking out for and what questions you should be asking when interviewing your candidates.

Next step is to identity your candidates.  You can start this process by asking your friends and any other vendors you have for referrals.  Once you get those, make a list.  It is important that you don’t just assume that because your vendors or friends referrals are good enough and just hire one of them.  You want to make sure for yourself that they are the right DJ before hiring them.  Next, go to a search engine (Google, Bing etc) and search for wedding DJs.  I recommend searching this by geographic location or even by the venue (i.e. Orange County Wedding DJ or Irvine Hilton Wedding DJ).  I recommend doing this because you will end up with a DJ that is local and even better, familiar with your venue.  Click on the results provided and look for professional caliber websites.  Remember, if they don’t invest the time and energy into creating a professional website, what makes you think they are going to invest the time and energy into performing your wedding the right way?

After you compile the list, start calling them and interviewing them.  First thing I recommend asking is if they DJ for a living or if they have a regular full time job.  The reason to ask this is that you have a far better chance of having a great wedding if this is what they do for a living.  Why?  Because they are relying on your event’s success to pay their bills and feed their families, not just for extra fun money.  Next ask about their training, education and experience.  Ask them about how they perform weddings.  If you like answers, then ask them about their pricing and write them down.  If you don’t like the answers or they can’t answer your questions, move on.

After you make your way through the list and have interviewed all of the candidates you will not only have a good list of DJs but you will also have a good range for pricing.  Select the ones you liked the best, I recommend narrowing it down to no more than the top 3 and arrange an  in-person interview at their offices and look to make your final decision after these meetings.

Contrary to popular belief, not all wedding DJs are the same.  While I am sure everyone knows this, I still get hundreds of calls a year that start with how much do you charge for a (insert any number here)-hour wedding.  Even more frustrating is when I give them my rates, they wonder why I am more expensive than the really cheap guy they found on the internet.  The reason is because they aren’t comparing like services.  Let me explain.  There is basically no barrier to entry to becoming a wedding DJ.  If you have Mp3s and the gear, you can call yourself a wedding DJ.  Because of this, it’s imperative that you do your research and find out what kind of DJ you are talking to and whether he/she is the right DJ for you before you inquire about pricing.
